Carved Pumpkin

The Colonel Town Spending Committee in cooperation with the Lancaster business district is hosting the 56th Annual Window Painting Contest.  This activity, sponsored by the Rialto Theatre (for grades 3-6) is offered in the spirit of the season and could not occur without the help of our local merchants.  Each painter should be mindful of the merchants contributions and show their appreciation with good behavior and tasteful paintings.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 17:  deadline for registrations.  Registrations must be sent to Colonel Town, not the Lancaster School

  • Thursday, Oct. 25:  paint will be available for pickup at Colonel Town from 3-5:00.  Group and window assignments will be attached to the bags of paint.

  • Monday, Oct. 29: window painting will be 3:00-4:30. Judging begins at 4:30.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 30:  (rain date for window painting)

  • Thursday, Nov. 1: windows must be cleaned by 5:00.

  • Friday, Nov. 2: winners will be announced at school, on Facebook and the web site.  Prizes for the winners can be picked up at Colonel Town by 5:00.

RULES:

  1. Form a group of at least 2 students and no more than 4 students who would enjoy painting a window together.  If a student is having difficulty finding a group with which to paint, he/she may ask their teacher for suggestions.  Colonel Town, however, will not create the groups.  All members in each group should represent the same grade.  This makes it easier to judge the windows (what’s excellent for 3rd grade might be average for 6th grade).

  2. Each member of the group MUST complete a registration form; otherwise, he/she will not be allowed to participate.  Example: if there are 3 members of a group but only 2 turned in forms, there will only be 2 children allowed to paint windows.

  3. Each group must have at least 1 adult supervising their work in progress.  Adults are not allowed to do ANY of the painting/drawing – this is an activity to be completed by children only!!

  4. Have ONE person from each group pick up your paint at Colonel Town.  The paint is sorted in plastic containers, conveniently ready for pick up in brown bags.  Colors of paint available are: blue,      green, red yellow, white, purple, orange and brown. Black cannot be used because it stains the windows.

  5. You will need a jar of water for cleaning your brushes and changing colors.  You provide your own brushes – cheap, fine line ones work well.  You will need newspaper to spread out on the sidewalk. Please be careful not to paint on the buildings or sills.

  6. Helpful hints:

    1. Begin by drawing an outline using a bar of soap.

    2. Leave a 2” border all around your painting.

    3. Neatness counts!  Clean up when you finish painting.  Take your trash home.

    4. Be creative and tasteful.  We do not want to paint something offensive, but want a festive addition to the merchant’s window.  Take pride in your work.

    5. Please be polite, kind and courteous to the merchant who has allowed you to paint.  Do not go inside the business to ask for supplies, food, etc.  Remember:  they’re working and their customers do not want to be bothered!!  Be sure to conduct yourselves as Ladies and Gentlemen to the people walking in and out of the businesses and other passersby.

  7. Each window will be rated 1-10 in the following areas: Neatness (painting/sill), Neatness (area), Creativity, Use of Many Colors, Overall Impression.  There will be a variety of prizes – the number of points your painting earns will determine which prizes you may choose from.

  8. The Colonel Town Staff and other volunteers will supervise the Halloween Window Painting Contest.  Names of people who are involved in any kind of disturbance will be reported to ColonelTown.  Severe discipline problems will result in suspension from Colonel Town programs for an extended period of time.

  9. Signed permission slips (or online registrations) must be completed and turned in to Colonel Town by 5:00pm on Wednesday, Oct. 17.  We need to be sure there is an adequate amount of paint for the contest and then the paint needs to be sorted for each group.

* Adjustments and discounts will be applied during checkout if applicable. *
